This is simply the best asparagus dish I have ever eaten in my life.
- Steam a pound or so of asparagus three quarters done
- Cover bottom of shallow baking dish with fresh basil leaves
- Put the hot, partially cooked asparagus on top of the basil
- Pat with a tablespoon of butter
- Drizzle with two tablespoons olive oil
- Sprinkle with a clove or two of fresh chopped garlic
- Top with a couple tablespoons of sesame seeds
- Bake at 350 degrees for fifteen minutes or until the seeds start to brown
I served mine with fried chicken and baked potatoes. Three out of four excellents and the other kid actually ate more than one bite!

Our asparagus is just coming on, and I’ve got a pot of basil that limped thru winter, so I’m going to try this tonight. No S & P? Interesting. We’ll see.
Thanks!

Of course, any asparagus aficianado knows that you need coarse ground sea salt and fresh ground black pepper for asparagus. This recipe however, stands as written. It’s not asparagus with butter, salt, and pepper. It’s a complex ambrosia of complementary and complex flavors. Try it without the salt and pepper, you might be surprised.
