Weekly Stumble Report April 23, 2008

April 23rd, 2008 · No Comments

Welcome to my Weekly Stumble Report! Below are about thirty links from the past week all of which were interesting enough in one way or another to earn recommendation. This week I cover music and discography, CMS and OS, food and agriculture, disabilities, health and environment, politics and rights, and arts and science.

Music and Discography

At the top of my research this week is a Beatles album, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. I found a copy on Vinyl at The Great Treasure Hunt of Boone The album itself has a fascinating history, pioneering and spurring adoption of new recording techniques. Each of these links are worth the read though it seems like a lot of info for just one album.

Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band

Marie Sioux I hope you enjoy this as much as I do. I like it for Marie’s ethereal voice, the delicious acoustic guitar, and the surreal lyrics.

Krister Linder “Downtempo Alternative.” This music is uplifting and creative. Listen on MySpace.com

Content Management Systems and Operating Systems

I am a big fan of open source software and operating systems. I’m typically also an early adoptee and I have to tell you that the upcoming version (1.10) of the TikiWiki CMS looks good.

Ubuntu has a new release this Thursday, Hardy Heron. I have experimented with Ubuntu since the Breezy Badger release and began to use it as my primary desktop when Dapper Drake was released. When I got the new hard drive I put Gutsy Gibbon on it and never bothered with Windows again.

I installed the Hardy beta release about three weeks ago. It’s promising. The outstanding Compiz 3d cube effects finally work with my old hardware. Backwards compatibility is an admirable selling point.

Last is this great article on understanding htaccess.

Food and Agriculture

I’m here in the heart of corn country, home of Monsanto and factory farming. Both are important contributers to the local economies but are they worth the cost? Fortunately, the local and organic food movements are strong here too.

Here are a few links regarding agricultural policy and local food security.

Disabilities

Capacity building, rehabilitation, and community involvement with disabilities in Cambodia.

Health and Environment

Here are links in regard to Earth Day, global warming, an excellent acupuncture knowledge base, and a possibly controversial topic.

Politics and Rights

This week I have The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, a story about people breaking the law to exercise their rights, Information some of those lawbreakers might wish we had, and some history of Tibet.

Art and Science
Haltadefinizione obviously means high definition and here you can zoom way in on The Glory of Saint Ignatio. Next, learn about the Earth’s magnetotail and its effect on the moon. Finally, I leave you this week with an illustrated factbook on Leksand and Dalarna.
